Top 6 eats in NYC

My Top 6 places to eat in NYC

1-The Halal Guys- 53rd and 6th

This is a food truck that serves middle eastern food that include gyros, chicken, rice platters and sandwiches. The food here is probably the most value for money meal you can get in the middle of touristy Manhattan areas like the Rockafella Center and in the middle of the city. The food is CHEAP, $6 for a rice platter or sandwich which is HUGE. Order to share. A Singaporean like me who has a larger than normal appetite could not finish even half of the rice platter. It's a must try. The meat was fresh, juicy and fork tender and was ambrosial coupled with the tangy ranch sauce and caustic hot sauce. Their turnover is extremely high hence they are able to serve you hot fresh meals for a few bucks.

Note: there are many food trucks that pose as the halal guys but are actually imitations of them. The original one is along the junction of the 53rd St. and 6th Avenue and they usually have an extremely long queue (but don't worry they are pretty efficient). This is a must try for a grab and go meal in NYC.

2-Robertas Pizza

Good ol'pizza in a hipster area in Brooklyn. This pizza place uses the old traditional Italian method of baking their dough, with a huge rotating oven over a coal fire. This explains the excellent texture of their pizza dough and the perfect evenness in the baking of it. Robertas is really popular and get ready to queue for a long time especially if you go on weekends and are in a big group. The price range for a pizza is reasonable and definitely worth it. We paid about $17/person each for 4 large pizzas shared amongst 5 people. The flavour of the pizza largely depends on the combination that you go for. Personally, i love the strong brackish taste of anchovies with a lighter and milder cheese like cottage cheese. Be adventurous and try a different variety!

3-Smorgasburg Brooklyn

A food festival every Saturday that offers a huge range and variety of artisan foods. A definite must go if you enjoy food like the Ramen burger, Blue bottle coffee, and other awesome artisan food. Warning though, food there is not that cheap (its artisan duh), but really really good and worth every single of your American dollars. Would recommend going early as the early bird catches the worm. One of the food I tried that really impressed me was the Ramen Burger by Keizo Shimamato. This product gained world wide recognition recently. The outer layer of hand-made ramen was delectable, tasty and not too salty. The piece-de resistance was a large piece of succulent beef that was fatty, oily and melted in your mouth.

Note: its an outdoor food festival so be sure to check the weather forecast in advance and also check if they are open in different periods of the year. They go from April through November. (As of Jan 2015)

4- Shake Shack @ Madison Square Park

The first shake shack ever originated from this very Site. It then expanded and is now an international name with countless branches in the US. This is a must try for people who have not been to NYC as the overall experience is amazing eating in the beautiful park. I personally love the Shack Stack and i think it's one of the best burgers ever with a combination of a succulent beef patty and a mouth-exploding golden-brown portabello cheese mushroom. Like most burger places in the US, Shake Shack claims that their beef patties are 100% made from whole beef from within the country. Their crinkle cut fries topped with creamy cheese was amazing as it hit the spot between deep-fried golden brown potatoes and opulent rich tasty cheese. Although shake-shack is really good, be prepared to pay a premium for it as it is considered upscale fast food.

5-Gray's Papaya

Cheap and good hot dogs. These two babies cost 4.99 USD with a drink. The hot dogs were fresh and not too salty, and the bread was warm, supple and dulcet. Simply delicious. I would personally advice you to add more toppings and mustard to go with it for the perfect dog. Topping are fresh, free flow and delicious. Another thing i love about the US- their natural produce.

6- The Boil

A super scrumptious meal!

The boil is a southern style (cajun & creole) seafood restaurant located in Chinatown Manhattan. They have some of the best shrimp i've tasted in my life and their sauce is absolutely incredible. Order 2 pounds for yourself if you are a big eater or a seafood lover. You can mix and match anything from shrimp, crawfish and lobster. If you aren't a fan of seafood, order 2 pounds to share with your friends as ordering 2 pounds will give you some corn and potatoes together with your seafood on the side. The sauce was heavenly and the prawns (shrimp in US) were fresh, delectable and to die for. I visited this place 4 times in my span of 6 months there. a MUST GO!
